The Pumpkin Patch
By Charlana Albios
Located on Sauvie Island, just 15 minutes northwest of Portland, The Pumpkin Patch is the place to go when searching for the perfect pumpkin with your preschooler. The farm provides hay rides out to the field where you pick your pumpkins, as well as other preschooler-friendly farm activities. This family-owned farm has been a local favorite for many years.
What Preschoolers Will Love About The Pumpkin Patch
Preschoolers will love spending a day at the farm. This farm not only has a gazillion pumpkins to choose from, but they offer hay rides, a hay pyramid, an animal barn, a cow train, the MAiZE (a cornfield maze), and plenty of room to roam.
What Parents Will Love About The Pumpkin Patch
There is no entrance fee and, with the exception of the cow train ($2 per person) and The Corn Maize ($7 for adults, free for 5 and under), activities are free. There is an amazing fresh produce market and a gift shop with lots of home décor and holiday items. They offer quite a selection of food (hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, sausages, fajitas, corn on the cob, baked potatoes, elephant ears, baked goods and caramel apples) and the prices are reasonable.
Other Things You Should Know
If you’re planning to get large pumpkins or lots of them, bring a wagon or something to carry them in while out in the field. If your wagon is too large to take on the hay ride, the walk out to the field is not very far.
There are shopping carts you can use to take your pumpkin out to your car, but they do not allow the carts to be taken out to the pumpkin field.
If you do not want, or are unable, to go out to the field to pick your own pumpkin, there is a great selection for purchase near the market.
They do not have an ATM at the farm so bring cash. The produce market accepts debit and credit cards, and will give you up to $20 cash back with debit purchases, but save yourself the hassle and stop at an ATM before you head out there.
The hand-dipped caramel apples are delicious!
